Bodegas Salentein: Where Art, Architecture, and Altitude Meet
Situated high in Mendoza’s Uco Valley, Bodegas Salentein stands as a striking blend of artistry, architecture, and viticultural excellence. Founded by Dutch entrepreneur, Mijndert Pon, in the late 1990s, Salentein helped put the high-altitude Uco Valley on the global map, crafting wines that reflect the grandeur of the Andes and the precision of modern winemaking. This was a time when the region was still largely unexplored, yet Pon and his pioneering estate invested in land, architecture, and art to create something that went beyond wine. On a recent visit, it was evident that Salentein has turned winemaking into a complete sensory experience — one that celebrates nature, creativity, and culture in equal measure.
Art: Killka Cultural Center
What sets Salentein apart from nearly every other winery in Argentina is its commitment to art and culture. Adjacent to the winery, the Killka Cultural Center is a contemporary gallery showcasing both Argentine and international artists. The center also features sculptures, photography, and rotating exhibitions, creating a dialogue between wine and art. Sipping Salentein sparkling wine amidst a living gallery is an experience that left me completely in awe!

Architecture That Inspires
Salentein’s winery is a masterpiece of modern design and symbolism. Built in the shape of a cross, the structure represents harmony between the four cardinal points — a tribute to balance and connection with nature. Constructed with native stone and embedded into the landscape, it uses a gravity-flow system to move wine gently from tank to barrel, preserving natural character and elegance.
Underground, is their circular cellar, reminiscent of an ancient temple or amphitheatre. This was, by far, the most stunning barrel room I ever beheld. The barrels age under soft lighting and classical music, creating a serene space that honors both craftsmanship and contemplation. I have loved Salentein wines for years, so imagine my excitement when I had the opportunity to visit their winery and experience their cellar. Outstandingly beautiful, awe-inspiring and evocative indeed.

In addition to the winery, the estate includes Posada Salentein, a boutique lodge that allows guests to immerse themselves fully in the landscape. With fine dining, hospitality, visually appealing and stimulating art, architecture and natural landscapes, Bodega Salentein offers more than wine tasting—it offers a truly immersive experience. This complete sensory experience helps communicate its values: sense of place, quality, and artistry.

Altitude, Purity, and Precision
Altitude is definitely key. Salentein’s vineyards lie between 1,050 and 1,700 meters above sea level, some of the highest in Mendoza. This altitude provides the hallmark of Uco Valley wines: warm, sun-drenched days that ensure full ripeness, followed by cool nights that preserve freshness and aromatics.

The vineyards are planted on ancient alluvial soils, with layers of gravel, sand, silt and limestone. Each vineyard parcel is carefully matched to grape variety, ensuring that Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir all express their best character. The winery also practices sustainable viticulture in terms of responsible water management, the use of cover crops to prevent erosion, and preservation of native flora across the estate.
The Wining Hour with Bodegas Salentein
Salentein’s portfolio showcases a wide range of styles and demonstrates versatility, from approachable everyday wines to highly acclaimed single-vineyard bottlings. Here, every glass captures the majesty of the mountains and the artistry of winemaking.
Salentein Primus Malbec: Salentein’s flagship, combining richness and elegance. Dark berry fruit, violets, and spice are lifted by fine tannins and mineral precision.
Salentein Primus Chardonnay: From the cool San Pablo estate at 1,600 meters, this wine shows citrus, pear, and a chalky, Burgundian elegance.
Salentein Numina Gran Corte: The spirit of the winery. A Bordeaux-inspired blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. Structured, layered, and long-lived.
Salentein Reserve Pinot Noir: A surprise from Mendoza, thriving in the cooler, higher sites with red cherry, floral lift, and silky texture.
Salentein Reserve Single Vineyard Wines (Chardonnay, Malbec, Cabernet Franc): Wines that showcase distinct terroirs across Salentein’s vast holdings, highlighting the diversity of the Uco Valley.
Salentein wines are nuanced, not just powerful or bold expressions. They show balance, power and refinement, expressing Mendoza’s trademark ripeness while honoring the freshness and structure provided by altitude and soil.
