Attitude and Altitude: Unearthing the Terroir of Doña Paula
Bodega Doña Paula, in Mendoza, stands out not for flash, but for focus. Founded in 1997 in Mendoza, the winery’s philosophy is rigorously simple: to craft wines that speak clearly of place, wines that are true expressions of the high-altitude terroir of Argentina. Today, the winery is recognized as a pioneer in the study of Mendoza’s micro-terroirs, with a deep commitment to mapping soils, altitudes, and climates across its estate vineyards. The result is wines that capture the essence of Argentina’s high-altitude terroirs with precision and elegance.

Vineyards Elevation and Soils
Farming exclusively from its own vineyards, Doña Paula’s vineyards are positioned in some of Mendoza’s most coveted and demanding regions, notably the Uco Valley and Lujan de Cuyo. Their high altitude vineyard sites, Ugarteche (1000 mt), Los Indios/El Cepillo (1,100 mt) and Gualtallary (1,350 mt), all very high above sea level, enjoy Mendoza’s hallmark climate—sunny days, cool nights, and minimal rainfall. The wide diurnal temperature swings slow ripening and build aromatic complexity, while the dry, breezy conditions help maintain healthy vines and pristine fruit.

The estate’s soils are diverse. In the Uco Valley, glacial and alluvial deposits give wines tension and minerality. In Luján de Cuyo, sandy and clay-rich soils produce rounder, more fruit-driven expressions. Doña Paula has spent decades studying these differences, researching, mapping soils, microclimates and altitude influences across its high elevation vineyard sites. In fact, on a recent visit, we were able to examine the vineyard mapping up close and see how they tailor grape variety and vineyard management to each parcel, which is a hallmark of Doña Paula’s style.

Pioneering Sustainability and Research
Doña Paula’s dedication extends beyond location. They are pioneers in sustainable viticulture and water efficiency, actively working to manage their vineyards responsibly and often employing organic practices to maintain the vineyard health of their desert-like ecosystem. During our visit, we were able to see their fabulous gardens and even pick the produce for our lunch!

Moreover, their famous “Terroir in Focus” project is a testament to this commitment, involving extensive research into how different soils and microclimates influence their flagship variety, Malbec. This is not just farming; it’s a detailed, intuitive and scientific pursuit of the perfect grape. Doña Paula employs the use of virtual reality to have an in-depth exploration of their terroir. We were able to use this simulator, which was rather remarkable. In fact, it was unlike anything I had ever experienced. It was quite innovative and brilliant.

The Wining Hour with Doña Paula
Doña Paula wines are marked by clarity, freshness, and site expression. While Malbec is the heart of the operation, Doña Paula’s portfolio is surprisingly broad, offering wines that are pure, varietally expressive, and consistently high quality across all price points. We tasted more than a few during our visit to the winery.

- Doña Paula Estate Malbec: The benchmark and hallmark of Mendoza. This wine is full of black fruit (blackberries and violet). Silky with soft tannins.
- Doña Paula El Alto Malbec is concentrated and generous with dark-fruit depth. Velvety tannins with a touch of cocoa and spice.
- Doña Paula Los Indios, El Cepillo Syrah Los Indios Parcel Wines are micro-vinifications that highlight single parcels, bottled in small quantities. Their El Cepillo Syrah comes from a cooler-climate, and is savory and aromatic. Elegant structure with lively acidity.
- Doña Paula Alluvial Pinot Noir is another single vineyard parcel that is red-fruit drive, silky and precise with fine tannins.
- Doña Paula Alluvia Sauvignon Blanc: From cooler Uco Valley sites, showing citrus, white peach, and a chalky mineral backbone. This Sauvignon Blanc is crisp, high-altitude freshness.
- Doña Paula Altitude Series: Multi-varietal blends that showcase different vineyard elevations, from plush Malbec and spicy Syrah to structured Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines are literally their research in the bottle, and they are named after the elevation of the vineyard from which they are sourced. Pretty cool!
- Doña Paula Selección de Bodega Malbec: The flagship or icon wine, sourced from the best plots in Gualtallary. Concentrated yet refined, with dark fruit, graphite, and a long, mineral finish.

Ultimately, Doña Paula is not seeking to make a wine that tastes like anywhere else. Instead, they make wines that reflect place. They strive to make wines that feel deliberate, balanced and unmistakably tied to the mountains behind them. They are a beacon of quality, offering drinkers around the world a clear, crisp, and mineral-driven taste of the Argentine Andes.
