From Breganze with Precision: The Wines of Maculan
In the hills of Breganze, in Italy’s Veneto region, Maculan has built a reputation rooted in precision, restraint, and deep respect for place. The winery’s story began in 1947, when Giovanni Maculan founded the estate with a focus on quality viticulture in a region better known at the time for quantity. Over the decades, the family transformed the estate into one of Veneto’s most respected producers, guided today by a philosophy that favors clarity of fruit, thoughtful blending, and wines that reflect both tradition and modern refinement.

All of Maculan’s vineyards are located in the province of Vicenza, in the Breganze DOC zone. Breganze’s rolling landscape, marked by volcanic and limestone influences, provides structure and freshness. The climate is characterized by pronounced diurnal shifts and balances warm summers with cooling breezes descending from the nearby foothills. This variation allows the grapes to ripen fully while retaining acidity. This natural equilibrium is central to Maculan’s vocation: crafting wines that combine approachability with longevity.

On a recent virtual visit, I had the opportunity to meet Giovanni’s granddaughter, Angela, who represents Maculan’s 3rd generation. Angela works as the Export and Sales Manager, alongside her father and sister, Fausto Maculan and Maria Vittoria, respectively. Fausto assumed leadership in 1973, and today, he is widely regarded as one of the leading figures behind the modern reputation of Breganze. In fact, Fausto Maculan is one of the Founding Members of the Comitato Grandi Cru d’Italia. He helped elevate its wines to international recognition through a commitment to quality, innovation, and respect for local tradition. Fausto championed both classic varieties and indigenous grapes, while also gaining acclaim for wines such as the structured red, Fratta and the iconic dessert wine Torcolato. His efforts proved to be a big shift in quality and his work has played a significant role in bringing attention to Breganze as a serious wine-producing territory, demonstrating the region’s ability to craft wines of elegance, balance, and longevity. We were delighted to taste some of Maculan’s wines!

The Wining Hour with Maculan Wines

Maculan Pino & Toi 2024
Pino & Toi is a fresh and lively white blend that combines Pinot Bianco (“Pino”) with the native Venetian variety, Tai Bianco (“Toi”). Tai is known elsewhere as Tocai Friulano. The wine is actually produced with 60% Tai, 25% Pino Bianco and 15% Pinot Grigio. Pino & Toi opens with delicate aromas of green apple, citrus blossom, and white peach that lead into a crisp palate of pear, lemon zest, and subtle almond. Bright acidity keeps the wine vibrant and refreshing, finishing clean with a touch of minerality from its volcanic and tuffaceous hills.

Maculan Brentino 2023
The name Brentino, comes from ‘brenta,’ which is the nearby river. It also refers to the “Brenta” approach to farming around the river that emphasizes careful hand harvesting and sustainable or organic vineyard practices, prioritizing grape quality over high yields. Brentino is an entry-level wine that consists of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon from the best vineyard plots. As Brentino offers immediate charm, Angela referred to it as an “everyday wine.” Spending half the year in steel and half in oak, Merlot contributes plush plum and blackberry notes, while the Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and hints of cassis and spice. The result is a smooth, medium-bodied red with ripe dark fruit, gentle tannins, and a polished, balanced finish. It balances fruit concentration with freshness, making it accessible yet structured.

Maculan Palazzotto 20222
Palazzotto, named after the vineyard, is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon-driven wine that leans deeper and more contemplative. Dark cherry, blackberry, and hints of graphite emerge aromatically. On the palate, it shows density without heaviness, supported by firm but refined and well-integrated tannins. Notes of tobacco and subtle oak frame a lingering finish. Angela can confidently say that “nobody ever gets disappointed with Palazzotto.” I could not agree more! This wine is lovely!

Maculan Fratta
The name Fratta means “steep slope” and comes from the local village with the same name. Fratta is the estate’s flagship red and a commanding Bordeaux-style blend, crafted from the best, low yield, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot single-vineyard plots. Fratta was affectionately referred to as “our little jewel of Breganze.” It unfolds gradually with intense aromas of cassis, black plum, and cedar. The palate is layered with structured tannins and impressive depth. As it is aged for 18 months in French oak, secondary notes of dark chocolate, spice, and savory herbs add complexity. Full-bodied and rich, yet elegant. Fratta is built for aging, making it a great wine for cellaring.

Maculan Dindarello 2025
Dindarello is an intensely aromatic dessert wine crafted from late-harvested Moscato. The grapes are dried for one month, which intensifies the aromas. It is then fermented in stainless steel and aged for 3 months in the bottle. A pale yellow in the glass, Dindarello bursts with notes of apricot, orange blossom, and honey, while the palate offers ripe peach, tropical fruit, and candied citrus. Lush yet lifted by vibrant acidity, which keeps the wine lively and balanced despite its sweetness.

Maculan Torcolato 2023
Torcolato is a tribute to Maculan’s ancient origins and traditions. Torcolato, which means “twisted,” refers to the viticultural method of twisting the string and grape bunches until they are braided together, and then hanging them up to dry. Perhaps the estate’s most iconic expression, Torcolato is produced from dried, indigenous Vespaiola grapes. The appassimento or drying process, which is done for 4 months, concentrates sugars and flavors, yielding a wine of remarkable richness. Wow. Just wow. (Below, are photos of the grape-drying process at Maculan). There are layers of dried fig, caramelized pear, almond, and honey. Despite its sweetness, bright acidity provides balance, giving the wine both power and elegance. Torcolato also has great aging potential.

At Maculan, the portfolio reflects precision and a thoughtful balance between global perspective and local identity. International varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Bianco bring structure and familiarity, while indigenous grapes like Tai and Vespaiola anchor the wines firmly in the traditions of Breganze. By weaving these influences together, the estate demonstrates how Veneto’s terroir can support both classic expressions and distinctive regional character, resulting in wines that are at once approachable, expressive, and unmistakably tied to their place of origin.
